• Global Voices Organization: Empowering Communities in South Sudan

    Gender Based Violence (GBV)

Gender-based violence (GBV) in South Sudan is widespread, fueled by conflict, cultural norms, and weak law enforcement. Women and girls face high rates of sexual violence, domestic abuse, and child marriage, with many survivors lacking access to justice and support services. Organizations like the Global Voices Organization (GVO) are working to address GBV through legal aid, awareness campaigns, and reproductive health services. However, stronger legal reforms, education, and community engagement are essential to ending GBV and protecting women and girls in South Sudan.

About us

Leadership Initiative for Development Organization (LIDO)

Leadership Initiative for Development Organization (LIDO) is an independent registered non-government and nonprofit making humanitarian organization based in Juba under registration number 2938 under chapter 3, section 10 of the 2013 South Sudan NGO Act.  LIDO prime motto is “Building Community Leadership For A Prosperous Future”. LIDO is a humanitarian organization that aims to provide leadership capacity building for boys and girls, CP and GBV Protection for boys and girls, Educational programming services, Health and Nutrition services for community development and empowerment. LIDO seeks to work with different partners and communities, to empower the marginalized groups, regardless of religion, race, gender and ethnicity.

Background

In 2018, a group of  like-minded young professionals working in the development sector came together with a shared vision to respond to the urgent and pressing needs of communities in South Sudan, particularly those living in rural and underserved areas. Out of this commitment, they established the Leadership Initiative for Development Organization (LIDO).

Drawing from their experience in the development field, the founders were deeply aware of the hardships faced by rural populations and marginalized urban communities. Recognizing the magnitude and complexity of these challenges, they deliberately structured LIDO with broad and flexible goals, enabling the organization to expand its reach across various states of South Sudan and address multiple sectors of social development.

LIDO’s focus spans a wide range of thematic areas, including education, health and hygiene, youth and women empowerment, emergency preparedness and response, capacity building, free legal aid, human rights protection, child protection, prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (S/GBV), and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Its activities range from capacity strengthening initiatives to direct service delivery, with a strong emphasis on improving the lives of the most deprived and marginalized groups in society.

What distinguishes LIDO’s operational approach is its commitment to inclusive participation and community ownership. The organization prioritizes grassroots involvement by engaging local communities in the design and implementation of activities. At the same time, it mobilizes beneficiaries and stakeholders to promote values of peace, tolerance, and sustainable development. Through this dual approach, LIDO aims not only to meet immediate needs but also to foster long-term resilience and social cohesion.

Gender Based Violence

GBV remains a significant issue in the country, with various organizations actively working to combat it.

In South Sudan, women and girls face some of the highest levels of violence globally. The prolonged conflict has exacerbated GBV, including rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, and forced marriage. A UN survey found that 70% of women sheltering in camps had been raped since the conflict began, with the majority of perpetrators being police and soldiers
